Weight Control With Hypnosis

Want to lose weight?

This will make your new year’s resolution possible…normally and naturally.

When a person with a weight problem comes to me for help, I immediately tell them that I am not interested in weight loss. Well, that gets a reaction because obviously, a person with a weight problem wants to lose weight. But I say it with a reason.

Anyone can lose weight. You could have abdominal bypass surgery and lose weight. You could go on a fancy diet (there are a million of them) and lose weight. I could lock you in a room for a month and not feed you and you would lose weight. The idea is to take it off and leave it off. Hypnotherapy is the answer because it deals with the subconscious directly. This is where the problem exists.

To deal with the problem on a conscious level is difficult, if not, impossible. It is a subconscious problem. Anyone who eats more than he should or the things he shouldn’t, does so for emotional reasons.

He eats because he’s bored, frustrated because he gained weight, because he lost weight, to reward himself, because it’s the weekend, because others are eating. One hundred and one reasons other than what nature intended. Nature intended for us to eat to sustain our bodies. When we do it to a point where we make ourselves unhappy or even unhealthy, it is because we have a subconscious need to do it. Any irrational, compulsive, habitual, self-destructive behavior is subconscious in nature. The reason hypnotherapy is so effective is because it deal with the problem where it exists.

How did this problem get there?

When you were an infant in the crib and you cried, what happened? Some one picked you up, made you physically comfortable, changed your diaper, made you feel loved and wanted and secure. All the things an infant must experience. And you were fed. You received an oral gratification in response to your emotional and physical need. It didn’t happen once. Over and over again. And many times you were fed when you weren’t hungry. You might have been awakened to be fed. You might have been bored. You might have had a pain. What ever the reason you cried, the implication was, she’s crying, she’s hungry, feed her. In our society every Mother has to have a chubby baby. A chubby baby is a happy, healthy baby. “My baby is only six weeks old and she weighs so much!” There’s almost a competition that exists. Don’t misunderstand me. It’s an expression of love and concern on the part of the Mother. She wants the child to prosper. But it sets up this subconscious conditioning pattern.

How often is this oral gratification used for convenience? I tell about a Mother I saw in church. She was holding this infant and he was crying. He was letting everyone in that church know he was unhappy. She didn’t want to leave. She didn’t want to disturb everyone. She couldn’t change his diaper or walk up and down with him. Next best thing? Pacifier. What better word for it? She began poking it into the child’s mouth. He started turning his head back and forth. You’ve seen a baby do that. It was as if to say, “Mom, that’s not the problem.” She persisted. He started sucking on it. He went to sleep. There it is.. He was being programmed subconsciously that this oral gratification solved his problem. No matter what it was.

Later on, we start getting rewarded with food. “You’re a good girl. Here’s a cookie.” I would go to the barber and he would say, “Hold your head still and I’ll give you a lollypop.” How often does a child walk out of a doctor’s office, a neighbor’s house with a candy or cookie because he was good. Now when we get older we don’t need someone to do it for us. We do it ourselves. “I worked hard today. It’s the weekend. I lost five pounds.” Listen to the advertising. “You deserve a break today.” “For all you do this Bud’s for you.” Reward yourself.

How about holidays? Happy times. Family all together. No school. Name a holiday that isn’t food oriented. Halloween with the shopping bag. Thanksgiving, you are supposed to eat till you burst, Christmas with the cookies, Easter with the bunny. Fourth of July with the picnic. How could you have a birthday party for a child without ice cream, candy, cake and soda?

So we all grow up into our adulthood having been programmed subconsciously that an oral gratification can get rid of stress, reward ourselves, eliminate pain, loneliness, frustration, sorrow and so on.

Now, as a thinking person, you might ask… “Well, if that’s the case, Carl, why doesn’t everyone have a weight problem? How come some do, some don’t, some more than others?”

There are a lot of reasons.

First of all, we were not all conditioned in the same way. A great deal had to do with the household we came from. For instance, a Mother who solves her boredom with food will not give a bored child a pencil and paper. She will give her a cookie. A Mother who solves her pain with food, child falls down and hurts her knee, she gives her a piece of candy. Not intentionally mind you. But we tend to perpetuate our behavior. Often we see it go from one generation to another.

How about ethnicity? If you happen to be born Italian, fuggetaboutit…you have three strikes against you from the beginning. Food is so important. And what kind of food? Pasta and pastries and mountainous portions.

How about the fact that people express this need for an oral gratification in different ways. Sure some people eat to excess. Some people bite their fingernails, chew on a pencil even suck their thumbs.

Some people smoke cigarettes. Smoking is an oral gratification. They smoke if they’re bored, angry, frustrated, under stress, to reward themselves.. good old-fashioned coffee break. What happens when they stop smoking? They just transfer one oral gratification for another. Instead of a cigarette, life savers, cough drops, chewing gum, toothpicks. Anything to put out the fire. Ever watch a man smoke a pipe of a cigar? Half the time it is not even lit. Just something to put into his mouth.

Drinking is an oral action. We have to suck the liquid into our mouths. That’s why a child loves a straw. You seldom see people drink beer, soda or even water out of a glass any more. It’s a can or bottle. Note how some bottles have a nipple like cap.

And finally, any one who has lived any length of time knows that the emotional state we are in will determine how much we eat, drink, smoke or bite our fingernails. Someone in the midst of a horrendous divorce or a widow who is lonesome, people under stress will use these oral mechanisms to help them cope with the emotions they are experiencing.

So, what are we going to do about it?

The Hypnotherapist, using this thing called Hypnosis and using post Hypnotic suggestions to the subconscious mind, (where the problem exists), will break this negative conditioning experience. Erase it if you will. And just as it was put there by repetition he will take it away. Now, he can put some positive suggestions there. Things like will power, self-control, confidence, self-esteem, liking oneself better. Persons fighting a weight problem and losing don’t like themselves. They don’t like the way they feel, the way they look, the way their clothes fit them, what they see in a mirror. The trouble is the less they like themselves, the more they indulge. A vicious negative experience. What I can do is reverse that circle. Because you are more in control you like yourself better… the way you are feeling, … the way you look… the compliments you may be getting. And because you like yourself better, you are more in control. I simply reverse the circle. Why not? If you can go in one direction, you can go in another.

Then I can put some more good positive suggestions into your subconscious. Remember when we were children we were told that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. As adults our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. We are much too ambitious with food. That’s why psychologists tell us to never shop when we are hungry. We buy all the wrong things and too much of them. Watch people at a buffet table. They are hungry. It is so convenient. It is a wonder they don’t get a hernia carrying it back to the table. We tend to cook more than we need. At home we pile it on. Now it is on our plate, we have to eat it. You don’t waste food. (People are dying of hunger somewhere in the world..remember?). I put suggestions into your subconscious telling you not to be so ambitious. Take one scoop of potatoes. You can always go back for more. That’s where I separate from what most people are used to when they come to me. This is not deprivation. It is control. I bring to their consciousness what they are about to do and give them the power to make the decision that they know will be in their best interest.

Most people who eat too quickly, eat too much. They sabotage a very important function. Nature gave us taste buds and a chewing need. They have two functions. One is to turn us on to food. Make it more palatable. The other is to turn us off when we have had enough. All of our senses have what psychologists describe as a satiating point. It is Mother nature’s way of keeping us from over indulging. The problem is that when we eat too fast we bi-pass it. So that we are full, but still hungry. More inclined to eat more.

Here is the suggestive process that solves both these problems:

Each and every time you eat a meal you will sit down. You will take small portions of food on your plate. You will place small portions of food into your mouth. You will chew your food slowly enjoying the taste, the feeling of the food in your mouth totally and completely before you swallow. You will get more filling satisfaction from less food. You will eat less and be satisfied.

Attaining Exclusive Mental Performance

Every prudent individual is expected to pay key attention on various mechanisms of brain nourishment. What measures can be taken to attain overall brain health? If a person notices early symptoms of brain dysfunction, it is imperative to pursue vigorous and thorough diet revision at the earliest opportunity. Brain nourishment goals can be attained through intake of brain supplements alongside a healthy and balanced diet. Surveys have revealed that the type of feeding methods adopted by a person can directly affect his/ her brain health. Thus the importance of making good judgement regarding nutritional habits adopted as good health is the best asset one can have.

The only way that individuals can tap the vast potential within them is by maintaining ample brain health. Intake of brain nutrients and supplements in correct proportions is a good course of action towards achieving an excellent mental performance. There are numerous nutritional supplements all aimed at enhancing mental functioning. Several benefits can be derived from intake of brain nourishment supplements.

Memory improvement is one fruit of brain nourishment efforts. Many individuals struggle with bad memory which may be an outcome of continuous drug consumption, alcohol use, head injury and nervous disease to name just but a few. All these factors may result to memory loss which in turn lowers the mental performance of an individual. Medical tests can be carried out to diagnose a mental problem and regular medical checkups are imperative to keep brain health in check. Many people can attest that adopting proper brain nourishment techniques could solve memory loss problems in no time.

Supplements are also effective in maintaining brain focus. Due to many distractions and responsibilities of contemporary lifestyle, many individuals lack proper focus meaning they cannot fully concentrate while carrying out activities. Brain nourishment through supplements can help improve the concentration abilities of the mind. Lack of focus lowers mental performance as it is hard to excel in a task unless proper concentration is maintained. Focus supporting brain supplements like ginkgo pills can enhance mental performance as well as overall brain health. Many individuals suffer from attention deficit disorder and proper brain nourishment is the starting point towards achieving a balanced brain health.

Intake of brain nutrients propels mental power through stress control. One of the common brain health disorders is excess stress where with the many pressures of life, people find it hard to relax. Stress is the leading impediment to proper mental performance and chronic mental stress could result to serious conditions like heart disease. Adopting effective brain nourishment strategies can help counter the problem of stress before it gets out of hand. Stress management supplements are important in restoring brain health and vitality.

With the increased sensitization and awareness about the importance of attaining appropriate brain health, many suppliers offering brain supplements have come up. There are numerous websites dealing with brain nourishment products. The only task to be performed by a buyer is to make a choice of the most appropriate supplier to settle for. With so many suppliers available, it is good to possess some background information of a website before making a purchase. This will ensure that reliable products are attained and that customers do not undergo any type of exploitation. Wrong choice of supplier may impede the attainment of a consumers’ goal of accessing genuine and effective brain supplements.

Causes of Back Pain

One of the most common complaints of people consulting a doctor is back pain. What people should know is that this condition, although sometimes unbearable, may be resolved after a few weeks of treatment. However, if the condition is something chronic or something that re-occurs often, it may be a symptom of an underlying more serious disease. To make sure of this, whether you consult a health care provider or not, the first thing you need to know is the source or the cause of the back pain.

The following are the most common causes of back pain you need to watch out for:

- Muscle strains: These are the most common among all the causes of back pain. We get muscle strains when we abruptly exert effort to move against the opposite direction triggering spasms on your muscles. These pains on your back caused by muscle strains will eventually fade away after a couple of weeks.

- Discogenic back pain: This is the damage of the intervertebral disc of a person but without havic disc hernia. Discogenic back pain can cause pain on your lower back and can be diagnosed using a medical equipment called discogram.

- Herniated disc: This is also referred to as a ruptured intervertebral disc. The treatments that are applied in this kind of condition varies from person to person

- Spinal Stenosis: This kind of condition happens to people as they grow older. Spinal stenosis happens when your spinal canal becomes too tight. This condition is caused by the constrictions happening to your body as you grow older and conditions like arthritis. This in turn, will cause back pain.

- Osteoporosis: This is a condition more commonly attacking people of old age. As you grow older, your bones need more calcium more than ever and if not properly supplied with this, your bones become weak and can cause fractures and compressions in the spinal column that which cause pains on your back.

- Spondylolisthesis: When bones degenerate, it can cause the loss of a stabilized spinal column. Because of this, the vertebrae may slip and may cause misalignments on your spinal column that can cause pains on some parts of your back, at the very least.

These common causes of back pain should not be overlooked for these can cause you weeks, months, or even lengthy chronic episodes of pain. If you are unsure about what causes these pains on your back, it’s recommended that you consult your health professional.

A Basic Overview of a Dicom Viewer

Medical facilities both large and small have come to rely on the DICOM medical imaging format as the basis from which their entire radiology departments operate. DICOM is similar to JPEG format that is used on personal computers as an image format for photographs, but DICOM has been designed for use in a medical environment. Because of that, it is the universal language that medical image acquisition, archival, viewing and distribution equipment uses so that all of the different components can read each other’s data. A DICOM viewer is a key component that everyone who works in radiology uses for looking at digital medical images.

At their hearts, DICOM viewers are personal computers that are running viewing software. With this software in place the viewer enables users to display and edit digital medical images. Some viewers are also connected to the Internet. With this additional feature, digital images may be sent over the Internet, which enables consultations with physicians located anywhere in the world with a workstation running the appropriate software. This translates into time and money saved, with the added benefit of better patient care being the result.

Digital medical images of all varieties can be viewed on DICOM viewers. This includes those that offer 3D renderings. These viewers offer physicians the ability to look at cross sections of images, rotate them and look at selected slices of an image, something that was impossible with a film image.

Many medical facilities also use these digital viewers to help them stay in compliance with HIPPA regulations concerning patient privacy. Everyone using the viewer must be given a username and password and must log in to have access to digital images, and this control mechanism helps to provide security to the system.

Another benefit that medical facilities with viewers enjoy is the speed and savings that they achieve. With the click of a mouse and within seconds, authorized personnel can bring up any digital images that they require, unlike using hard-copy film images that required a great deal of physical labor for maintenance and use. Because the speed helps to improve workflow, it also helps to save the medical office money as well.

Portable X-Ray Machines

Many medical offices rely on portable x-ray systems to help them meet the needs of patients who cannot travel to their facilities for treatment. Physicians who work in nursing homes, sports stadiums or on cruise ships will need a portable x-ray imaging medical device to help them take digital medical images for patients who are not at a home medical facility. When the portable digital x-ray machine is coupled with a PACS system loaded onto a laptop computer with a wireless Internet connection, the physician will be able to not only capture digital images, but also view them, transmit them and then store them with the help of the computer system.

A portable x-ray system that produces DICOM medical images brings all the practicality found in a full office-sized radiology suite to your off-site patients but in a compact package. Systems are available featuring CR or DR imagers, and both can be used in a portable environment. These mobile imagers are typically used with wheeled carts, making it easy to move the equipment to the patient. The weight of the equipment is much lighter than a full-sized imager, and comes in at around ninety pounds. Models are available that can fit into a mobile unit, making it much easier to pack and unpack the necessary devices to obtain the digital images that you need.

You can gain an extra level of versatility from the portable equipment when you also utilize a PACS system on a laptop personal computer. The PACS component will allow you to view, send, receive and archive the digital images that you take while away from your home office. This means that you can use the laptop as you would a workstation. The PACS will help you enhance the digital images that you take, and you can immediately send them over a secure wireless Internet connection to consulting physicians who have access to a workstation running PACS. Peripherals such as printers can also be attached to the laptop computer, allowing you to print if needed. You can also store the digital DICOM images that you take while away from the home facility on your laptop, or send them via the Internet to a secure storage archive, where they will be ready for you or other colleagues to access when needed.

Demand For Hygenic Products in Healthcare

Following increased media coverage on the cleanliness of hospitals and the danger of deadly ‘super bugs’, the Government’s ‘Deep Clean’ policy has been brought in to ensure all hospitals undergo a ‘deep clean’, incorporating everything from the larger elements through to all fixtures and fittings. In response to heightened demand, the market has seen an explosion of products, designed to ensure the ultimate hygienic solution.

Hospital Superbugs

During recent years, the news agenda has been permeated with concerns over the rise in hospital superbugs, culminating in a damning indictment of hygiene levels in the health service. One report showed that a prime stomach bug found in hospitals, Clostridium Difficile claimed 72% more lives in 2006 than it did in 2005. In fact, it was shown that since 1990 the number of people infected by this deadly bug has risen 50-fold. This is in addition to the threat posed by one of the most common hospital superbugs, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) which has been linked to 9,510 deaths since 1993. Illustrating the immense scale of the problem, it has been estimated that almost three times as many people are now killed by hospital infections as are killed on the roads each year.

Government ‘Deep Clean’ Programme

Consequently, in September 2007 the Government announced the ‘Deep Clean’ programme, with an aim for every NHS hospital to be thoroughly cleaned to industrial standards, including all fastenings and fixings, in a bid to tackle such hospital superbugs. As an added knock-on effect of this, the electrical industry has seen an unprecedented demand for products which can work to improve hygiene in healthcare. Many leading manufacturers have subsequently dedicated significant resource to developing highly innovative and advanced solutions for healthcare institution, helping contractors and installers meet this developing requirement.

Products with Antimicrobial Properties

There is, for example, an expansive array of cable management products with antimicrobial properties, designed specifically for industries where hygiene is a top priority. As microbial organisms can also cause product deterioration, discoloration and bad odours, these products combine antimicrobial treatments to help prevent these effects and provide an extra level of protection when combined with normal cleaning procedures. These systems typically use a bespoke PVC-U treated with a silver-based material. This delivers ongoing antimicrobial properties that prevent 99.9% of harmful bacteria growth, without impacting on the effectiveness of the product itself, even if scratched or damaged.

Studies Show Effectiveness of Antimicrobial Treatments

To provide a clearer understanding of the undisputed effect of such systems, numerous studies have been completed, comprising of separate testing for MSRA and Klebsiella Pneuoniae, in accordance with ISO 22196:2007 on a Bio and a non-Bio sample, to expose the known quantity of bacteria under laboratory conditions. Following a period of 24 hours, the quantity of bacteria still present was measured. These studies have shown, in both cases, the survival rate of bacteria on the Bio sample to be less than 0.1%.

Scratch-Free Designs Reduce Dirt Traps

Many premium electrical accessories brands have also developed equally innovative solutions to aid in the healthcare sector’s ongoing battle against superbugs. Health environments can look to safeguard from germs by using wiring accessories which incorporate a high grade thermoset material with similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives, helping to significantly inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. Again, these products even incorporate a scratch-free design meaning there are no dirt traps for bacteria to breed.

Broader Solutions Offer Hygiene, Adaptability & Security

Looking to the wider picture, while hygiene is the primary focus of such solutions, many manufacturers have also given considerable time to introducing added benefits to the health sector. To allow for utmost flexibility, many of these ranges include single and double gang socket outlets and are available in either switched or unswitched. These are suitable for all builds, ensuring the benefit of easily ‘adding on’ as needs evolve. To ensure maximum safety in an environment where it is so pivotal, others boast a highly effective ‘child resistant shutter system’, which only opens when the plug is positioned correctly and can considerably reduce misuse. This provides a comprehensive solution for the key healthcare issues of hygiene, adaptability and security.

As the media continues to dedicate news time and column inches to the issues around cleanliness within health establishments, there will remain an environment of concern around hygiene. As a result, the increasing demands for electrical products which can contribute to any hygiene regime will only escalate and contractors will need to stay aware of this in order to meet the evolving needs of their customer and, in turn, provide a competitive edge and make healthy profits.

Neem For All!

Neem is not only a great remedy for the treatment of several diseases in humans, but it has also been used for several years to get rid of pet’s fleas and infections. Certainly the neem oil is very helpful to improve the condition of your skin and to get rid of several bacterial problems including acne and boils. For animals, this oil is used to kill the bacteria that can cause infections and is a great way to kill the fleas that are often found on animals. Many people like to keep pets at their home, and even in their bed rooms, which can prove very dangerous for the health of a person, if the pet is not properly washed. For this reason, people use the water extracted from the neem leaves and its oil to bath their pets, so that the infectious diseases are not promoted from the pet to the people living at home.

Besides this neem leaf has the benefit to increase the activity level of immune system and has been found very effective for ensuring the proper functioning of liver, respiratory and digestive system. Moreover, it is healthy detoxifier of blood and is very popular for treating diabetes and malarial infections. Its benefits are unlimited and it is used for the treatment of many severe diseases including AIDS, ulcers, kidney problems, heart problems, hepatitis, diabetes and cancer to name a few dominant ones. There are several shampoos and soaps which are prepared from the neem not only for humans, but also for washing animals. Moreover, its spray is used by the farmers to kill insects and pests from their plants and vegetables.

A Brief History of Nursing Scrubs

The history of scrubs can be dated all the way back to the 19th century when nursing was not a formal profession. Women usually used their knowledge of first aid or midwifery to attend to their own or other’s children and other women at the expense of the state’s health services. At that time they were not given much respect and dressed up more like servants. For better recognition a formal and more proper uniform was assigned for them around the 1840s whereas by 1880 owing to the contributions of Florence Nightingale it was regarded as a more reputable profession.

Since then many variations and changes were introduced into the basic hat and gown typical for nurses. It was not until the First World War that the nurse’s uniform underwent major changes to make it more comfortable and convenient for mobility and routine work. Functionality was regarded as essential to the way nurses dressed up and hence their gowns turned into short skirts with short sleeved tops to go with them.

By 1930s fashion and style was incorporated into these uniforms mainly because of the increasing number in which women started to contribute into other professions. Over many decades a lot of variations were made to the basic dresses initially used by nurses giving functionality top most priority without overlooking the element of fashion and style.

In 1970 scrubs emerged as the latest rage especially amongst male doctors and nurses. It was then that the clothing scene for medical professionals was revolutionized and uniforms were designed to distinguish untrained staff from trained ones. Since then the scrubs have been popularly adopted as convenient clothing for medical use.

Owing to the increasing demand for these, a lot of companies have dedicated their services solely to making comfortable uniforms and apparels for medical professionals. Peaches scrubs is amongst them. Their range of styles, designs and colors ensures maximum compatibility and comfort for a large number of related individuals.

Whether you go for clothing by Peaches scrubs or any other manufacturer you must give ease the most importance and weight age when analyzing different types of uniforms. The reason for offering such a great variation is that choosing different colors and styles helps to distinguish the departments from one another and they also let you choose something that you feel confident and happy working in. end of the day its you personality and satisfaction that reflects through your appearance and work respectively.

Maintaining Perfect Health

Now that most of us are aware that traditional medicine, known as allopathic medicine, does not necessarily have your best interest at heart, it is time to continue our exploration of alternative health therapies.

I don’t want you to think I am being too hard on allopathic practitioners. If you have not yet read the ‘hippocratic oath’ then I suggest you search it out and read it. The hippocratic oath is a credo that doctors pride themselves on following. Doctors often cite the hippocratic oath in defence of their choices. But if they had to adhere to the oath as it was originally written and intended, I suspect that very few doctors could legally continue their practices.

When ever there is an action for which money is the reward, then you have a system open to corruption. Let’s examine a piece of the original hippocratic oath text. It says, “I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.”

Now lets examine how this piece of text has changed. Today it says, “I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow. I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of over treatment and therapeutic nihilism.”

What this means is that they will follow the lead of doctors employed by universities and research labs. Well guess who funds those labs? You got it – big pharma funds all of the research and big pharma will decide which studies see the light of day and which ones do not.

If you have any doubt about this, then search out Dr. Kilmer McCully and find out why Harvard Medical School was forced to stop paying him! He was among the first to identify that cholesterol is not a problem – that there are other co-factors involved. I will cover this extensively in another article. Meanwhile, doctors continue to prescribe billions of dollars worth of statin drugs to try to interfere with the body’s natural need for cholesterol.

The modern hippocratic oath also says, ” I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.” The problem here, though, is that there is no money in it for doctors to prevent disease! If your doctor is going to review your lifestyle and habits and make recommendations to prevent disease, then he is going to have to spend a great deal of time questioning you and examining your life habits. When was the last time you spent 45 minutes having a fireside chat with your doctor? I’m betting that you have never done this.

Under the modern compensation models, there is no incentive for doctors to perform in this way. To be fair to doctors too, I don’t think that most people would follow their advice if it was forthcoming. That is another systemic problem with society at large. The people that control everything don’t want you to change. They want you to start getting sick in your 40s so that they can sell you the latest drugs. There are simply too many billions of dollars at stake here.

If you are one who wants to slip under the radar and “beat the odds”, then you are going to have to do some diligence. You are going to have to find out all you can about staying healthy. It is going to have to become a focus in your life. My experience tells me that this isn’t going to happen in people under 40 years old. We all know that kids think they are bullet proof! I certainly never imagined any serious thing happening to me until I got heart palpitations at 49. At that point, my state of health got my attention and forced me to significantly change the way I do things.

As a professional researcher I already had strong research skills. All I had to do was change my focus to health care. Now I understand the systems and processes that happen in a human body, perhaps better than many doctors do. My own doctor, with whom I went to high school, was not able to keep up with me on most aspects of preventative medicine. Asking him to do so would be rather like asking a one legged man to enter a “butt-kicking” contest!

I encourage everyone to take an interest in their health. As you get older, you are going to realize that it is all you have. As a very first step, find out all you can about alkalinity and the alkaline diets. Find some Hunzana pH Drops and start making all of your drinking water fit for human consumption. That should be your starting point. After that, do your diligence and find out all you can about maintaining perfect health.

Patient Advocate Ninja

Quick quiz…after you get a truly great doctor and fantastic medical coverage, what one thing do you still need to insure your safety in a hospital? Think about it. Are you going in for a hip replacement, new elbow or knee? Likely you’ll be knocked out and have a few hours in recovery. If it is a big deal you may be staying a few nights in the hospital and maybe up to a week in a rehabilitation facility. Give up? You’re going to need a Patient Advocate Ninja.

Think of Mr. ‘T’ in scrubs. Start lining up a full blown body guard with nursing background and a touch of Sherlock Holmes. Maybe your third grade teacher will do (mine could stop a clock). Bottom line, you’re going to need someone to fight for your rights, guard your stuff and check your meds while you are drifting off to La-la-land. Maybe the next time I get sick I will simply hire the cast of the Chippendale dancers and check into the Biltmore Hotel. It will be cheaper, better service and with a much improved disposition of staff.

I have ‘graduated’ from every new age, self-help, religious and motivational program ever invented (yes, ‘sucker’ is written on my forehead). Tony, Jack, Werner, Brian, Napoleon, and Norman; I love you guys. Yet NONE of it prepared me for what lay ahead lurking in the hallways of our great healing institutions after Visiting Hours. I was, it seems, an educated, well-rounded, lightly basted renaissance sitting duck.

I was paralyzed from the waist down in 30 minutes by a rare neuro-immune disease. The shock of losing use of my legs was NOTHNG compared to the shock of losing my dignity, and darn near my life, by bumbling staff who apparently never took Economics 101. You know, the part where the patient’s payment pays your salary. Ergo: a) don’t treat the patient with disdain and b) don’t kill them off or they will stop paying your wages.

From first hand reports I hear, very few hospital are prepared for the patient load. Maybe the bean counters decided one nurse could actually care for 10 or more patients at a time. But speaking as one of those it’s a bad idea. I was given drugs improperly bringing on shock. I was asked repeatedly to get up and use the commode. Read the chart Art, if I could walk I’d get up and leave.

This from an article on the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (aacn.org): The ANA, which worked closely with Sen. Inouye’s office on the bill, lobbied for this legislation (nurse-patient ratio laws) to protect patients and registered nurses, given the absence of enforceable standards for nurse staffing in hospitals and the widespread practice of health care facilities stretching their nursing staff with unsafe patient loads, mandatory overtime, “floating” to specialty units without training and orientation and other practices that undermine the delivery of safe, quality care.

Speaking of floating, another time my bladder was not monitored, until it was at near fatal levels pushing toward kidney failure. I was of course blamed for not telling the staff I felt bloated. ‘My bad!” However in all fairness to me, I am…what was that long word on my chart that apparently no one can read… PARALYZED. FYI to the staff, strangely enough for some folks (moi), paralyzed means cannot feel anything. “I know, perhaps while I monitor my bladder, blood levels, fluid intake and out take I could manage your Mutual Fund Portfolio. I am such a slacker laying here with all this free time just wasted away in Marguerita-Morphine-Ville.” Yish!

Add to that being given the wrong pills. Oh, did I mention the infection on my arms from too many IVs? The night doctor said ice packs, the day doctor said heating pads. What to do? I used ice packs based on the fact that the night doctor was nicer. and cuter. (So sue me for sexual harassment; I was on death’s door. I cared?) And I was robbed (okay, it was only 4 Godiva candy bars @$4 a pop, but it wasn’t like I could jump in a car and go get more, was it?) And what goes better with morphine than chocolate?

I was misdiagnosed for the first two days. Fortunately I had a friend from my church who was a doctor who came to my rescue. He urged the hospital to get a neurologist. Once there the pleasant neuro-chappie diagnosed my condition in 5 minutes, thus saving my legs, so I can now walk. (LISTEN TO ME: Get these Patient Advocate Ninja people lined up in advance folks, you may need them.)

But what to do if you are in a strange place when all this occurs? Fortunately there is a movement afoot called the National Patient Advocate Foundation and they have a companion organization the Patient Advocate Foundation. These fine folks are for hire to help patients. This from their mission statement:

National Patient Advocate Foundation (npaf.org) is a national non-profit organization providing the patient voice in improving access to, and reimbursement for, high-quality health care through regulatory and legislative reform at the state and federal levels. NPAF translates the experience of millions of patients who have been helped by our companion, Patient Advocate Foundation (Patientadvocate.org), which provides professional case management services to individuals facing barriers to healthcare access for chronic and disabling disease, medical debt crisis and employment-related issues at no cost.

The NPAF and PAF is a great start, but let me tell you, you’re going to want to line up someone who can come with you into your room. A person who can watch your back when you’re, well, flat out on that back. This might be a good time to befriend a linebacker or a Harley rider, just saying.

I am not insinuating that all nurses are Nurse Ratched and all doctors are from TV’s “Nip Tuck”, but it only takes one bad apple to ruin a really pleasant hospital stay (and life).
